Local History

Before the enormous 7.8 earthquake in 1931, this area was on the edge of very large estuary, used for bathing and picnicking and market gardening. It was connected to Napier by a narrow road or by rowing out there. There was a racecourse too, which was well attended, patrons often rowing their ladies out, dressed in their finery. Now, however, with the land having risen 8 feet, it is covered with urban housing. The market gardens have gone, apart from 2 vineyards, Chirch Rd and Mission Winery. People flock to this peaceful, green suburb and have developed beautiful gardens in their properties. The council too has made lovely parks and flower gardens, and there are kilometres of walking and cycling tracks

The Mission Winery

This is one of the oldest wineries in New Zealand. It was started originally by the Brothers of the Marist Community, and set in Meeanee Rd. After many floods it was decided to move the Mission House up to higher ground, no easy feat in 1911. The very large building was divided into 9 pieces and dragged about 5 kms, by traction engine, up hill to its present site and put back together. It served as a scholasticate for young brothers for about 80 years, where they farmed, butchered, cooked, studied, cleaned and cared for themselves. It now houses offices and the popular Mission Restaurant. Each year in February, a large outdoor concert is held, starring  well-known overseas guest artist. The Amphitheatre holds about 25,000 . This is just 15 minutes walk for our Lodge.

Hawkes Bay Airport

About 15 minute drive away, our airport is being extended to take larger international planes in to Napier. Rental cars maybe hired here, and we can collect guests from their plane.
